Meet Our Designers: CommonRaven

by Anna Kopito | 19.11.14

CommonRaven is a womenswear brand founded by Rachel Cohen in 2011 and based in the old city of Jaffa. Working out of her family’s metal recycling factory, Rachel pays homage to the history of her surroundings with her unique pieces. The clothing takes root in both Rachel’s Middle Eastern heritage and her chic European training from Istituto Marangoni in Milan and work in London. The collection is simple and sophisticated, focusing on shaping fabric to maintain modernity and yet flow organically with it’s wearer.

Telavivian: What one piece of clothing do you wear the most?

Rachel Cohen: Currently I wear a lot of dresses – dresses are happening for me now.

What is you idea of the perfect Saturday morning?

Wake up – not too late – have time to fix a good breakfast of fruit, pancakes, jam. Take a nice stroll if the weather is good. Settle in to watch a good movie. But I never get that.

What is your favourite drink?

In Jaffa, near the studio there is a place that makes a really good drink – soda with apples and cinnamon and mint.

What is your greatest achievement?

When I moved to Milan and stayed there for a while and lived, that was a great achievement.

Best wall colour?

We painted the walls white with a pinch of grey – it’s just perfect, it goes with everything.

If you were to die and come back as an animal, which animal would it be?

Either a bird or a horse.

What is your perfect accessory?

Good earrings really change an outfit.

What would you like to change about the fashion world?

In Israel we can change a lot – I’d like to change the perception of Israeli fashion – I want there to be more quality, things that last longer – for people to be proud of what is made in Israel.

What is your motto?

Be happy with what you have but always aspire for more.

– “the only way to avoid criticism is to say nothing, do nothing, be nothing”

How would the world be different if it was run by women?

Oh it would be amazing! There would be a lot more talking, everyone would care more if women ran things. There would be more emotion, it would just be better.

What do you like most about your new collection?

That I want everything for myself – it’s super wearable and very comfortable and I feel very cool in every piece I put on.

What is your highest ambition?

To make everything work together – to never stop working, to be persistent and never give up and to fulfil everything I want – to go week by week making my weekly dreams happen.

If you weren’t a designer, what would you have done instead?

I have absolutely no idea – there is no plan B – I can’t imagine myself doing anything else.

What is your favourite restaurant or cafe in Tel Aviv?

Rothschild 12 – it’s no secret, but it’s great.

What is your most treasured possession?

My family.

Who is your favourite Israeli artist?

Ron Arad.
